Sisters' Surprise Congo

Limited Edition - Limited Availability

Sisters' Surprise. These are special discoveries by Sarah & Lieze, the roasters behind Ray & Jules. Here’s what Sarah has to say about the new Sisters' Surprise coffee from Congo:

Akenji underwent a longer underwater fermentation, followed by a double-wash process inspired by the processing methods commonly used in Kenya. This gives the coffee juicy fruit notes and a creamy mouthfeel.

A refined, fresh, and floral coffee with a tea-like character.

100% Arabica from Congo. Intensity 2 - SCA 83.25. Recommended brewing method: filter.

Sisters' Surprise Congo in short

This coffee from the Congo is a refined, fresh, and floral coffee with a tea-like character. Recommended for drip brewing.

Fair: fair trade or direct trade

Our ultimate goal: equal and direct relationships with cooperatives and/or farmers . We want to give them ownership in the coffee chain and grow together towards climate-proof plantations.

If this is not (yet) possible, we choose FTO. Through these labels we can be sure that farmers receive support to provide for their livelihood and to invest in their coffee cultivation.

What's special
about this coffee

Idjwi lies in the middle of Lake Kivu, between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda. The island is known as the “Island of Peace.” In a region that has been plagued by conflict for years, refugees, former combatants, and victims of the violence have found a safer place here to build a new life.

Coffee plays an important role in this. The producers of the SCPNCK cooperative grow their coffee on small family plots, among cassava, bananas, and other crops. The Bourbon coffee grows at high altitudes in volcanic soil. The cherries are hand-picked and processed at local micro-stations. Thanks to a small hydroelectric power plant, the cooperative is also able to carry out more and more stages of processing and quality control on the island itself. In this way, coffee not only generates income but also creates jobs, knowledge, and future prospects within the local community.
