Impact: Direct Trade with Laura & Heradio

After months of video calls, engaging conversations, and plenty of coffee samples, a wonderful partnership developed with Laura and Heradio and their cooperative in northern Nicaragua—a partnership based on trust, quality, and a shared vision for the future of coffee. We agree on our purchase volumes even before the harvest. This way, Laura and Heradio know they can count on us, and we rely on their craftsmanship and love for coffee. Of the approximately 200 metric tons of coffee produced collectively by the 50 member farmers, we purchase about 23 metric tons. A wonderful commitment on both sides!

In November 2024, we traveled to Nicaragua ourselves to get to know them and their way of working better. You can read all about our visit here.

We visited again in January 2026, and we’ll be returning in January 2027 as well. In the meantime, we’re gearing up for our fourth harvest together, and every year we purchase a larger volume. That growth and the confidence in a long-term partnership also give Laura and Heradio room to dream again. And dream they do! From a thriving coffee cooperative to plans for ecotourism on their beautiful farm. A future full of possibilities, in other words. Talk about impact! 😉

Laura & Heradio: Between Challenges & Dreams

Meet Laura and Heradio, a young couple with a big mission! They live with their little daughter Sofia Mélida and Heradio’s parents on the family farm Santa Mélida, a beautiful green oasis in northern Nicaragua. Coffee has been a part of both their families for over 100 years. In 2022, they decided to join forces and, together with other coffee farmers from the region, founded a cooperative. Their ambition? To build a future in which coffee farmers earn a fair income, gain more control over their production, and restore—rather than deplete—nature.

And that’s no easy task. During our visit in November 2024, Laura explained how they nearly lost half their harvest due to a severe labor shortage. “People no longer want to work on the plantations, or they’re emigrating.” Still, they kept looking ahead and searching for solutions.

When we visited them again in January 2026, we saw how their plans were gradually taking shape. They’re involving more and more farmers from the region in their cooperative, focusing on better compensation, and promoting regenerative farming practices. Their next big dream is to have their own dry mill, where they can prepare their coffee for export themselves. This will give them more control over quality as well as over a significant part of the coffee supply chain.

About coffee from Nicaragua

Coffee has a long and eventful history in Nicaragua. Since the 19th century, it has become one of the country’s most important agricultural products. But political conflicts, an unequal distribution of land and wealth, the civil war of the 1980s, and natural disasters such as Hurricane Mitch in 1998 made life difficult for coffee farmers.

Nevertheless, farmers continued to invest in their future. Cooperatives played a key role in this: by working together, small-scale producers gained more opportunities to process their coffee, improve its quality, and gain access to international markets.

Today, Nicaragua is known for its fine Arabica coffees, especially those from the mountainous regions in the north. But the challenges remain significant. Climate change, a labor shortage, and uncertain incomes are putting pressure on coffee cultivation.

That is precisely why initiatives like Laura and Heradio’s cooperative are so important. They demonstrate how a new generation of coffee entrepreneurs is taking matters into their own hands and building a future in which growing coffee once again offers prospects.

Producers & cooperative

The Cooperativa Agropecuaria de producción Las Victorias del Balcón is a relatively young and small cooperative that is strongly committed to the conservation and restoration of nature. Its member farmers work according to agroecological principles, focusing on crop diversification, shade cultivation, and the use of organic products. They are also working toward official organic certification, for which they are currently seeking funding.
