What's special
about this coffee

Sakami is an organic and socially progressive coffee farm run by Gloria & Jarmo, who use a direct trade model and work closely with local female coffee farmers. One of these farmers is Jane Kamau. Coffee cultivation on her Wanrich Farm got off to a slow start, with only two bags of coffee from eight hectares in 2017. By working closely with the Kenyan Coffee Research Institute and with guidance from Gloria (Sakami), Jane learned which coffee varieties were best suited to her soil, when to prune, fertilize, and harvest. That effort paid off: in 2021, she harvested nearly 100 bags. Jane focuses on quality and growth — and is continuously expanding her plantations.

About coffee from Trans Nzoia County

Kenya is not a mass producer like Brazil or Colombia, but is known worldwide for its exceptional quality. Only 0.5% of global production comes from Kenya, but it is often loved by top roasters. The Kitale region of this coffee is located at the foot of Mount Elgon in western Kenya, a region with fertile volcanic soils. Although the area is mainly known for corn and livestock farming, the specialty coffee sector is emerging, thanks in part to pioneers such as Jane and the support of organizations such as NORT (association of independent female coffee producers in western Kenya). Coffees from this area are relatively new to the export market, but show great potential due to altitude, soil conditions, and committed farmers.

Producers & cooperative

Jane quit her job as a banker in 2017 to become a farmer. Not only did she take over the family business, but she also trained as a coffee exporter. Her strength lies in her people-oriented approach: she offers permanent jobs to employees, promotes local employment, and actively works to empower women. She is on the board of NORT Women's Group, which is committed to establishing a processing station for farmers in Kitale. Jane is more than a farmer—she is a building block for a strong coffee community.
