What's special
about this coffee

The Narmada estate spans more than 240 acres and grows both arabica and robusta coffee. The estate is rich in more than 50 species of jungle trees and an abundance of wildlife, including the Indian gaur, spotted deer, barking deer, wild boar, Malabar giant mongoose and crested snake eagle. The property is managed by Manohar Shetty, who has successfully switched to organic farming. He has significantly increased vermicompost production and constructed several water catchment basins. Remarkably, farmers are encouraged to accept wildlife damage to crops, something quite unusual in India.

About coffee from India

India is one of the oldest coffee-producing countries outside Africa; a monk is said to have smuggled coffee seeds from Yemen in the 17th century and planted them on the hills of Chikmagalur. Coffee almost always grows there under shady jungle trees along with spices such as pepper, cardamom and vanilla. India produces both Arabica and Robusta and both with quality. Most plantations have been owned for generations by families with a tremendous wealth of local knowledge, traditions and innovation. Increasingly there is a commitment to regenerative agriculture with attention to soil, water management and harmony with the local ecology.

Producers & cooperative

Our partner This Side Up got to know Komal and Akshay through social media in 2020. The first collaboration was an import of specialty Robusta. A market in Europe that was quietly beginning to grow. In 2022, the assortment expanded to single farmer lots, community lots and soon SICC's arabica proved to amaze many. The collaboration deepened year after year and SICC developed as a forerunner in sustainable technology with soil analysis, a large solar irrigation system, a bee project and even an innovative economic model that compares profit per hectare to profit per crop.
