Impact: regenerative agriculture & direct trade

The Kivu region is experiencing an exodus of coffee buyers because the region is plagued by complex problems (including child labor). By purchasing there, we support a project that uses the principles of regenerative agriculture to make farming families economically stronger. This creates space to raise awareness about child labor.

What's special
about this coffee

In this region, South Kivu, there is a lot of child labor on the coffee plantations and therefore school dropouts. That is a reason for coffee traders not to buy the coffee, which makes the situation worse. By purchasing this coffee through This Side Up, we support these farmers and can also raise awareness about child labor.

Regenerative agriculture is used to create sustainable coffee communities with improved economic, social and ecological
security.

About coffee from Congo

Coffee was introduced to Congo from Liberia in 1881, but it was not until 1898 that production really took off, under the heavy hand of the colonizing Belgians. After independence in 1960, government support decreased and production decreased severely.

With many ups and downs, Congolese coffees have managed to fight their way into the Specialty Coffee segment. A country with a lot of potential (altitude, soil, climate), but due to its turbulent history, the Congolese are still confronted with serious challenges today. The best coffees from Congo have a fresh fruitiness, are sweet and can have a full, pleasant body.

Producers & cooperative

Spicy Sara comes from the village of Kavumu where cultivation and processing takes place at home with hand pulping machines and improvised drying equipment. The challenge here is to tackle farmers' extreme poverty through regenerative agriculture principles.

RAEK, the cooperative, was founded in 1996, is still
increasingly dependent on subsidies to survive. Despite the many challenges, RAEK has carried out excellent work in terms of quality and transparency.

My new favorite. I am a big fan of the fresh taste, but I think the story behind these coffee beans is especially important, to fight together against child labor.

Heb er nog een favoriet bij!

Bij het openen van de verpakking, was de geur gewoon zalig! De eerste slok van mijn kopje was direct een schot in de roos. Perfecte samensmelting van frisse geuren en smaken. Een echte zomerkoffie.
