What's special
about this coffee

Intango is an initiative of Gilbert Gatali, who, together with his childhood friend Gervais, took over the Intango washing station in 2017 and breathed new life into it. They immediately began focusing on improving the incomes of coffee farmers. They introduced a system of reliable additional payments for quality that farmers received early in the harvest season.

In addition, Intango supports them with advice and training on harvesting and processing coffee, enabling them to improve quality and work more sustainably. This means that farmers not only benefit financially, but also build a stable future for themselves and their community.

About coffee from Rwanda

Coffee was introduced to Rwanda around 1900 and quickly became an important export product during the Belgian colonial period (after 1916). After the devastating period of genocide in 1994, farmers and cooperatives rebuilt the sector, with a strong focus on quality and sustainability and support from numerous projects and NGOs.

Today, Rwanda is known worldwide for its bright, fruity specialty coffee, and these coffees are increasingly winning internationally renowned awards. To this day, Rwanda remains primarily a country of small coffee growers who unite in cooperatives to earn more, improve their coffee, and strengthen their communities.

Producers & cooperative

Spicy Sara comes from western Rwanda, the Karongi district on Lake Kivu. Processing takes place centrally at the Intango washing station, where quality is closely monitored and rewarded.

Intango was taken over in 2017 by Gilbert and Gervais, who in a few years' time turned it into a solid organization with some 400 members. By paying the farmers extra for quality, they manage to keep motivation high and also provide the farmers with better living conditions.
