Impact: Sugarcane decaf & direct trade

Finding a decaf coffee that is decaffeinated without chemical solvents and also retains enough flavor and character is a challenge. For this Colombian decaf, we are working with a small trader that we have known well for several years. Besides the natural decaf process, we also support 21 farmers here with a fair price.

What's special
about this coffee

The decaf process for this coffee is the so-called Sugarcane method which is known for its natural way of decaffeinating and also helps the coffee retain its flavors (unlike other chemical processes where the flavor of the coffee often becomes flat). The process uses ethyl acetate, a substance found in sugarcane. The coffee beans are first steamed to prepare them and then immersed in a solution of water and ethyl acetate. This process repeats until 97% of the caffeine is removed. The beans are then steamed again to remove any residual ethyl acetate and then dried until their original moisture content is restored. This process is carried out by Descafecol in Pitalito, Colombia.

About coffee from Colombia

Coffee in Colombia was introduced by the Jesuits in 1723, but it took until 1912 to make coffee a major export product. Colombians quickly realized that marketing and "brand building" were very important, and in 1958, coffee farmer Juan Valdez was put forward as a signboard by the FNC (Federación Nacional de Cafeteros). He and his mule symbolized Colombian coffee and appeared on coffee packaging and various campaigns.

Meanwhile, the DNC has grown into an unwieldy organization that does not always put the quality of coffee first. Colombian coffees have a wide range of flavors, from heavy chocolatey coffees to very sweet, fruity coffees. Again, the different regions with their own climate types add a lot of nuances to the bag.

Producers & cooperative

Our decaf coffee was purchased from 21 families from the villages of Pitalito, Palestina, Acevedo and Santa Maria. A 10% premium was paid to the farmers above the official price of the national federation. The coffee is fully traceable and the farmers are no longer forced to sell only to the government where they have nothing to counter the low(er) prices. Hulcafe closely monitors the quality of each producer's coffee to help them improve it. In this way, relationships with farmers are strengthened, as well as their access to the market. We get samples from Annelise every year and this time it included a decaf sample from Huila, Colombia. It was the first time for us that the deca coffee looked so beautiful on a table next to other non-deca coffees. Very nice and rich flavors, tad exotic, but also caramel notes. We were completely sold ! Especially since Annelise always gives us the story behind the coffee. The latter is not obvious and certainly not for a deca coffee.

Heerlijke Deca-Koffie

Koffie zonder cafeïne is niet altijd even smaakvol. Afternoon Eve is the best. ❤️

Hele lekkere deca
