Impact: regenerative agriculture & direct trade

This blend consists of a proportion of fine robusta from Rende Nao in addition to Sunny Joe and Powerful Peter. Rende Nao is one of the poorest regions in Indonesia with very limited resources for farmers. With the support of our partner This Side Up, the Ontosoroh cooperative has developed an entire program around agroforestry and regenerative agriculture, and with success.

What's special
about this coffee

Strong Stephan was our first 'house blend' and inspired by the typical Italian espresso coffees. To achieve this, we dared to move away from 100% Arabica coffees and looked for a good robusta that could provide some extra spice.

Origin visit 2024: the robusta from Indonesia is grown on organic plantations (no label because of the financial cost of this) and agroforestry farming practices. The arabica comes from Guatemala on the one hand (origin visit doña Olga) and Honduras on the other (BIO label, origin visit Cafesmo).

About coffee from Indonesia

Rende Nao is an area on the island of Flores in Indonesia.Indonesia started exporting arabica coffee in 1711, but a major coffee plague in 1876 caused the entire crop to fail. So they started growing the more resistant robusta variety. Today, Indonesia is still known for its robusta coffee.

One of the unique aspects of coffee production there is their method of processing ("giling basah"); a combination of the crops and natural processing methods. In the bag, this creates a coffee with less acidity, a heavy body with occasional hints of earth, wood and spice.

Producers & cooperative

This blend comes from 3 regions. You read anything about the share Guatemala at Powerful Peter, for the share from Honduras you can find the information at Preview Honduras.

The Ontosoroh cooperative grows robusta in Rende Nao (Flores), one of the poorest regions in Indonesia. Our partners for this coffee set up an agroforestry system to increase coffee production and generate alternative incomes for 100 farmers there.
