Impact: Direct trade with Olga

After an impressive visit to Olga's farm, we decided to work with her. For her, it is the first time she was allowed to negotiate the price for her coffee. We bought up the entire crop and plan to do this for the next few years. Olga says she never before felt that her work was so appreciated and valorized.

What's special
about this coffee

Powerful Peter was the reason to travel to the origin for the first time (in 2021). Much of the information read online really became clear and meaningful. The difficult reality of the farmers hit us.

In February 2024, Sarah headed to the region again, this time to build a partnership with Doña Olga. At the beautiful finca San Florencio, Olga works on weekends with her (grand)daughter, during the week she is a teaching assistant because they cannot make a sufficient living from coffee. The finca is located in a beautiful paradise, full of flowers, tropical plants, old trees and birds of all colors. With this collaboration we support Olga. We agreed to buy Olga's entire harvest. You can read the result in this blog.

About coffee from Guatemala

Coffee in Guatemala only became important after 1856 when chemical dyes drastically reduced the demand for "indigo" (natural dye). Indigo was then the main export product and so the government began to look for ways to encourage the coffee industry. The government did not always do this in an ethically responsible manner and the land of indigenous peoples was taken en masse.

In the 1950s, reform law came to expropriate and redistribute land for agricultural activities. This caused a lot of fuss and eventually resulted in a long civil war (1960-1996) that is still felt today and causes a lot of problems for the Guatemalan people. Coffee from Guatemala is very varied, ranging from rather light, very sweet, fruity and complex coffees to heavy, rich and more chocolatey flavors.

Producers & cooperative

Since June, Powerful Peter has come from the paradisiacal finca of single woman doña Olga, in Las Barrancas, Quetzaltenango. Together with her daughter Alejandra, she grows the most delicious beans. Her farm is within walking distance of her aunt's, Doña Alba.

A beautiful region, but with a sad history where the government in the 1980s massively persecuted the indigenous people and destroyed their villages.

Zonnige groet,
team Ray & Jules
