Yes, if you log in with your details you can manage your subscription yourself .

You can run 2 subscriptions together if you want to combine two coffees.

Can I only take out a subscription with a credit card?

Yes, in this way you give us permission to automatically charge the amount for each order.

Coffee

Why is my coffee pack bloated?

This is a good sign! This means that your coffee is very freshly roasted. Coffee must degas after roasting. The valve in the packaging serves this purpose (air can come out but not in).

If the coffee is packaged immediately after roasting, the valve may not be sufficient and the bag will inflate somewhat. It is best to make the hole in the valve a little larger (with a needle, for example) and push some of the air out.

In short: it's actually a good sign of very fresh roast.

Why are the coffee beans lighter in color that I am used to?

We roast our coffee lighter than the average coffee in the supermarket. We consciously choose to roast at lower temperatures and take more time. Lower temperatures logically require less energy , but it also has a lot to do with quality !

If you buy good green coffee beans, it is a shame to roast them very dark or even black. This will burn away all the subtle/complex flavors and aromas that this coffee bean contains. You only want to do this if you have low-quality coffee to (1) cover up less good flavors (due to unripe/rotten berries or defects) and/or (2) always generate the same bitter, burnt taste.

Moreover, lighter roasted beans are also better for your health and digestion: after all, you are not drinking 'burnt' coffee.

What is the best way to store my coffee?

Coffee is best stored cool (at room temperature), dark and airtight .

Which grinding degree should I choose?

Coffee loses its aroma - and therefore its quality - as soon as you grind it, so ideally you buy beans and grind them just before you brew a cup. Don't have a grinder? We think it is more than worth the investment! On this page we summarize our suggestions .

Would you rather order ground coffee? Then you adjust your grinding degree to the brewing method to get the most out of your coffee.

With some brewing methods the coffee is in contact with water for a long time (requires a coarser grinding degree), with others it is in contact with water for a very short time (requires a finer grinding degree). It is therefore important that there is no over- or under-extraction. In the first case, your coffee tastes too strong, too intense. In the second case, too weak or watery.

  • French press/cafetière : coarse grind
  • Filter and Aeropress : medium grind
  • Bialetti/moka pot : fine grind
  • Espresso/portafilter : very fine grind

I want to purchase a grinder, which one do you recommend?

Would you like to purchase a grinder yourself to fully enjoy your cup of coffee? The flavors and aroma come from oxidation and the oils in the bean . When grinding, the oxidation process starts and the oils are released. On this page we summarize our suggestions ; from a simple hand grinder to a range of grinding settings, an option for every budget!

My coffee suddenly tastes different, how is that possible?

Coffee is a natural product. Coffee beans grow on plantations in their country of origin, where they are picked when ripe. This means that we regularly receive a new harvest . These extremely fresh beans taste a little different than previously harvested beans. We eliminate these differences as much as possible with our roasting recipe, but real connoisseurs may notice it.

I am allergic to nuts, can I drink your coffee?

Fortunately, yes. You don't have to worry about allergies as we don't add anything to our coffees. The terms you see on the packaging are just an indication of (after)tastes. So taste carefully and see if you can detect them!

Sustainability

Is my coffee still sun-roasted without CO2 when the sun barely shines in Belgium?

Our solar roaster is 3x more energy efficient per kilo roasted than a traditional coffee roaster. This new technology means we need much less energy, which we usually get from our solar panels with ease.

For 6 months/year there is even overproduction that we inject into the grid. During the dark winter months it occasionally happens that we have too little sunlight. Through a green energy guarantee contract with our supplier, we are assured of green energy on those few days.

What does Fairtrade mean for Ray & Jules?

The coffee sector is gigantic (after water and tea, it is the most consumed beverage in the world), dirty (on an ecological and social level) and the chain is long.

Ray & Jules was born from an ecological dream to reduce global CO2 emissions from coffee roasting . Unfortunately, we quickly learned that coffee producers are victims of large corporations. They have a monopoly over the sector and pay little attention to the farmers.

That also became a priority for us, although that path takes time and money. As a first, necessary step, we switched our entire range to Fairtrade. This way we can be sure that farmers will receive support through their cooperative to provide for their livelihood and also to invest in their coffee cultivation.

For us , Fairtrade is a start , but it doesn't end there. We are constantly looking for more direct relationships with those cooperatives and/or farmers' organizations. We want to determine the conditions and prices together with them as equal partners. In addition to the ecological ambition, this social goal is at least as important to us, but this requires a lot of networking and building trust. We have come a long way for some of our coffees, but for others we are still dependent on Fairtrade certification.

What does direct trade mean for Ray & Jules?

Direct Trade is a term used for coffee roasters who buy directly from the farmers. All unnecessary intermediaries are excluded and it is clear who earns what in the chain. This system strives for relationships that go beyond the transactional. A sense of equality is important, which can be seen in mutual and transparent processes that promote best practices in coffee and safeguard the rights of farmers, the community and the environment ( S. Panhuysen and J. Pierrot, Coffee Barometer 2018 ).

For Ray & Jules, this is the ambition to set up direct collaboration for each of our coffees and communicate about this with our customers. Setting up something like this takes time, patience, trust and resources. We have already come a long way with a number of coffees, but a lot still needs to be sorted out for other coffees. If you have more questions about this, you can always contact our burner Sarah at sarah@ray-jules.com .

What does organic/organic coffee mean?

Organic coffee production means that no synthetic fertilizers, chemical pesticides and herbicides are used. There are also many conditions surrounding biologically responsible maintenance of the soil, ensuring more closed cycles and stimulating biodiversity.

The organic certification is legally protected, which means that both the farmer and the processor (Ray & Jules in this case) must meet strict international standards. Every year, checks are carried out on every link in the chain and it is only when every link is certified that the product can be sold as 'organic'.

This also means that each party has to pay for this label, which is often impossible for small farmers without the support of a cooperative.

How sustainable is Ray & Jules packaging?

We chose this packaging to protect the freshly roasted coffee beans from oxygen, light and moisture; and thus guarantee quality. We have opted for plastic packaging that is recyclable via the PMD stream and is also effectively recycled in Belgium.

It is a complex issue, and we have conducted a study with our supplier with professionals from BE and NL to choose the currently best solution. We also investigated bio-based packaging that looks much more sustainable and is more sustainable in terms of production, but because it is a multi-material, it must be sorted with residual waste.

When we look at the local footprint, the impact/footprint is as follows:

  • Roasting: 80-85% of the footprint
  • Transport: 7-10%
  • Packaging: 5-8%

For companies we work with reusable buckets per 4kg .

You are also always welcome in our roastery with your own pot that we can fill for you with coffee beans or packaging that you wish to reuse.

How do I recycle the Ray & Jules packaging?

We have opted for plastic packaging that is recyclable via the PMD stream and is also effectively recycled in Belgium.

This means that the packaging consists only of plastic, and not of other materials (which would mean that it would have to be sorted as residual waste, like most coffee packaging). In addition, our packaging has been optimized to minimize packaging material.
