After months of video calls, long/content conversations and many coffee samples, the time has come; a long-term partnership with the relatively small and young cooperative of Laura and Heradio. These 12 coffee growers produced 55 tons of coffee this year of which we bought just under 23 tons with Ray & Jules.

In November 2024 we will be heading to Nicaragua to get to know these passionate people and their way of working better.

aan deze koffie

This cooperative has 12 producers who “run” 17 farms. Laura Davila & Heradio Morena, in addition to being married, are the founders of the cooperative. Coffee has been in both their families for more than 100 years and they joined forces in 2022 through the creation of this coop to face the many challenges in the sector.

About coffee from Nicaragua

It was not until 1840 that coffee began to become economically important in Nicaragua. During the dictatorship of the Somoza family in the period between 1940 and 1980, the coffee sector was hit hard with especially severe impact on the farmers. In 1998, Hurricane Mitch brought another tragedy to the sector.

Fortunately, recent years have been better for the coffee growers so quality of cultivation has improved tremendously. The coffees from Nicaragua possess typically complex and fruity flavors and a clean acidity.

The Cooperativa Agropecuaria de producción Las Victorias del Balcón is a relatively young and small cooperative with a strong commitment to conservation and restoration. In addition to seeking finances for BIO certification, they are already working according to agroecological methods, doing crop diversification, shade growing and using only organic products.

Specificaties

Processing: Washed. The coffeeberries are picked manually and then completely washed.

Harvest months: December to March.

Variety: 60% Catimor, 40% mix Pacamara, Bourbon, Geisha, parainema, Villa Sarchí.
