Lekkere Koffie

    Sisters Surprise 'Burundi'

An incredibly delicious, adventurous coffee with notes of rhubarb, red fruits and "brown spices" (cinnamon, nutmeg ...). Highly recommended according to Sarah and Lieze!

At the first tasting, both Lieze and I were amazed by this fine coffee. And the story is even more wonderful!

    REGION & ALTITUDE

This coffee comes from several small-scale farmers in the Gitwe hills (altitude: 1900-2100m), Kayanza province in northern Burundi. The region is known for its coffee and tea production.

    Producers & cooperation

Coffee grows here among many other crops: onions, sweet potatoes, maize, bananas, beans, cassava and cabbages. Farmers bring their cherries to HEZA washing station for processing and quality control. Heza washing station is managed by Long Miles Coffee Project. A couple founded this organisation in 2013 with the intention of making a positive change in the lives of farmers.

For instance, they ensure that agronomic experts visit the farmers several times a year to give advice and best practices. At the HEZA washing station, farmers also get a better price for their coffee, the quality is monitored and they receive extra annual premiums for this. They have also started a reforestation project Trees for Kibira’. Osito Coffee, our importer for this coffee, has been working with Long Miles Coffee Project for 4 years based on shared values: high quality, working with the same farmers every year and paying good prices for their coffee.
